GLOVES, shoes and Scrooge

We have a duffle bag full of gloves.  We have always had a problem keeping the pairs together so last year I decided to invest in a bunch of the same style and size of gloves.  The theory was that even mismatched gloves could be worn together.  Now all of the gloves in the bag match exactly.  By 'exactly' I mean that the bag is full of identical left-handed gloves.  I'm sure somewhere in the house is another bag full of right-handed gloves, but in the meantime I'm running around town with two left-handed gloves.   Well, it seemed like a good idea at first.

I'm still trying to get in the mood of Christmas.  We missed Saint Nicholai's Day, a German tradition we adopted when we lived in Ansbach, Germany.  That is when children set out their shoes in the hope that St. Nicholai would come by and fill them with candy and treats.  Last year my kids lined the upstairs hallway with dozens of shoes in a greedy attempt to score more candy.  St. Nicholai only filled one shoe each, and to be perfectly honest after smelling the feet that come out of those shoes I wouldn't eat anything that had been placed in them, even if it was wrapped.  This year we completelely forgot about it... until yesterday.  I learned real quick how important traditions are for kids, even older ones.  I shall be contacting St. Nicholai to hopefully arrange a special visit in order to restore peace in Oompa Loompa Land.

We're supposed to go to the mountains this weekend in search of the perfect Christmas tree.  Hopefully that will get me into the mood.  I've just got the blahs.  Maybe its because this will be the first Christmas that our family will not spend together.  Maybe its because of where Gabe is and what he is going through.  And maybe its because Dickidoo has already told me that I won't be getting any Christmas presents (or Birthday presents, or Mothers Day, or Anniversary....) for the next few years because of what he spent on my camera equipement.  What a scrooge!  I need a new lens!  Bah Humbug!

Ok, Dickidoo can not get you a gift but inform him he needs to get you gifts from the kids...and a new lens would be perfect!  Ta da!  I am sure this must be a rough year for you...hang in there and fake it for the other kids.

Be well,
Dawn

Awww!  Traditions ARE important! I hope that St. Nikolai can get back to Oompa Loompa land and fast!  And fresh cut christmas tree?!?!  I'm so jealous! I have a tiny little tree, it'll do for this year, but I sure do miss that smell from the real one!  I'm sure this Christmas will be hard on you, but just remember that even though Gabe's not here, he's alway's *here* in your heart.

Traditions do keep a family going sometimes. The kids probably do not want any changes..not having their brother there has got to be affecting them too. That was funny about the gloves I always felt that my missing gloves ran away with the missing socks!  Sandi http://journals.aol.com/sdoscher458/LifeIsFullOfSurprises

G said the same thing when we got my new camera in October. It was supposed to be my last birthday, Christmas, Valentines Day, Easter, and possibly next birthday's present.... But, I caught him talking to the lady at the camera shop in the mall about what would be a good 'second' lense for me. She found him one that does not only telephoto, but Macro... Shhhhh! he doesn't know I know he was looking at it ;p

I've always wondered what happens to the other glove or the other sock. Where do these things go ? Have a great evening.

You lived in Ansbach, Germany!?!

Wow, what a small world. So did I for 3 1/2 yrs from 1988 to 1991, courtesy of Uncle Sam, of course! LOL

Did you ever go to Nuernberg for Kristlenacht? (spelling)

Traditions are surely good, especially around Christmas time. My mother, in the past 5 yrs or so, have put a "village" together of Victorian blgs and people and such forth...It's not perfect..far from it. BUT my mother loves to get the stuff out each Christmas and put it up. I will in NO WAY say nothing about it, for if I did, it will hurt her deeply. It's the Spirit of giving and it is blessed to give than to receive.

Ah yes, Good old St. Nicholas.  I know him well, or at least the story of his life.  That story can be told at another time.  St. Nicholas only weighed 140# and "Dear Ole Dad" represents St. Nick to anybody wondering why this (Me) Santa is so thin.
I've been St Nick to Dorn since 1963 and she never (at least not to my face) asked why Santa was so thin.

Since Cinncinnati was settled by Germans, just about everyone around here celebrates St. Nicks..
